Capitals hire coach, sign two
The Walkerton Capitals of the WOAA Senior AA Hockey League
announced a new head coach last week, as well as the team’s first
signings for the 2010-11 season.
The 2010 Senior B champs introduced Hanover’s Ryan Enright as
new head coach Thursday. The Kincardine native was an assistant
coach with the club last season, and this summer coached the
major bantam AAA program for the Walkerton based Quick Feet
program.
Enright will have some new talent at his disposal when the season
begins. Walkerton is pleased to announce four players have been
signed, including Adam and Chris Corbett. The twin brothers were
both First Team All-Stars in the Western Junior C Hockey League
last season, and Chris finished second in league scoring with 35
goals and 70 points in 63 games. Brother Adam, meanwhile, had 40
points for the Ironmen. Cory McDonald, who had 17 goals and 32
points last year for Wingham, was also signed to a card.
The Capitals also re-signed captain Andy Cline, who is coming off
an 18 goal, 42 point season. More signings are expected to be
announced soon, and the Caps will hit the ice in Walkerton
Tuesday, Aug. 23 at 9 p.m. For more information on try-outs,

This Season

The Capitals enter their fourth season in the WOAA as Senior “B” champions.  And while this was a significant accomplishment and stepping stone, we have yet to gain entry into the Senior “AA” championships which was again won by Port Elgin Winter Hawks.  This season we have bolstered the team with several off season acquisitions and have provided both depth on defense and additional offensive punch. Additionally we have promoted last year’s assistant coach Ryan Enright to the head coaching position.  These changes we believe, will propel the Caps to become a dominant force in the Senior “AA” northern division.  We will  be faster, with more scoring punch and extremely solid along the blue line and in goal.

Off Season Signings

In addition to signing Ryan Enright as the new head coach, the Caps have signed Adam and Chris Corbett and Cory (CMac) MacDonald. The Corbett twin brothers were both First Team All-Stars in the Western Junior C Hockey League last season, and Chris finished second in league scoring with 35 goals and 70 points in 63 games. Brother Adam, meanwhile, had 40 points for the Ironmen. Cory McDonald, had 17 goals and 32 points last year for Wingham.

With the addition of these three highly skilled players and the re-signing of Captain Andy Cline, goaltender Jason Hamilton and winger Brady Houston, the Capitals have a decidedly “Ironman” flavor.  Ex Toronto Maple Leaf Nathan Perrott, former Kitchener Dutchman Shawn Bechtloff, and former Pickering Panthers star Kyle Roulston, are also coming back.

Capitals open season Saturday
The new-look Walkerton Capitals will be on display Saturday night in Walkerton.
The Caps will kick off the 2011-12 WOAA Senior AA hockey season against the Ripley Wolves Saturday at 6:30 p.m. It's the first chance to see some of the new talent acquired by Walkerton in the off-season.
After falling just short of its goal to make the AA playoffs last season, Walkerton acquired some of the best talent available from the Western Junior C Hockey League. Adam and Chris Corbett, twin brothers who were both First Team All-Stars last season, will debut as Caps on Friday night, as will Cory McDonald. McDonald was captain of the Wingham Ironmen last season, and will join Adam on an improved Walkerton blue line. Chris, meanwhile, finished second in Junior C scoring last year with 35 goals and 70 points for the Ironmen.
After a season as an assistant coach with Walkerton, Ryan Enright has been promoted to head coach. He'll be behind the bench for Saturday night's home opener. In addition to the Corbett twins and McDonald, he'll also have former Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nathan Perrott at his disposal, as well as captain Andy Cline - who finished with 18 goals and 42 points in just 24 games last year.
Jason Hamilton, who stole a few points on his own last year for his teammates, will return between in goal, as will veteran puck stopper Adam Clark.
Brandon Fraser, Curt Robinson, Dave McIntosh, Luke Snider, Mitch Allen, Tim Dwinnell, Tyler McAfee, Brady Barfoot, Mike Huber, Shawn Betchloff, Jeff Barfoot, Greg Tiffin, Brady Houston, Josh Howald will also all return to the team. Several others have confirmed they will play for the Capitals, but have yet to sign cards.
Saturday night's home opener against Ripley is the lone game of the weekend for the Caps. Walkerton will face Saugeen Shores the following weekend in the Winterhawks home opener Oct. 7 at 8:30 p.m., and will be back at home Oct. 8 to face the rival Shallow Lake Crushers at 6:30 p.m.

Caps robbed at home
Walkerton starts season 0-3
Walkerton is still looking for its first win of the 2011-12 WOAA Senior AA hockey season.
The Capitals are now 0-3 after dropping two weekend contests, including a tight one at home Saturday night.
The Caps came back from a 5-2 third period deficit, but were stripped of the game winning goal with 2:38 to play. Adam Corbett evened the score with 1:24 remaining, and Curt Robinson scored on a partial breakaway less than a minute later to make it 6-5 Caps. The celebration was cut short, however, as officials waved off the go-ahead goal and sent Brady Houston to the penalty box for an interference call away from the play. The play, however, was not whistled down.
In any event, Shallow Lake’s Scott Luckhardt scored the game winner on the ensuing power play to lift the Shallow Lake Crushers to a 6-5 win and leave the Capitals with an 0-3 record.
Former Kincardine Bulldog Cole MacDougall opened the scoring for the Crushers, but Robinson notched his first of the season when he picked the top corner after breaking down the left wing. James Ireland and Corbett assisted on the tally. Shallow Lake took a 2-1 lead to the break after Jeremiah Henderson scored a power play marker late in the frame.
Tom Michi, Ian Barnard and Drew Wilson scored second period goals for Shallow Lake, with Michi’s coming on the man advantage. Robinson scored his second of the game on a power play to make it 5-2.
The third period was all Capitals, with Mike Huber and Andy Cline scoring less than a minute apart to cut the lead to one. Corbett’s game tying goal came on the power play from Cline and Shawn Bechtloff. Robinson’s hat trick was then denied, and Luckhardt scored the winner from Chris Robertson.
Trevor Van Wyck picked up the win in goal for Shallow Lake (1-0), while Adam Clark takes the loss for the Caps.
The previous night in Port Elgin, the Caps were badly outshot by the defending champions from Saugeen Shores. The Winterhawks took a 3-0 lead in the first period, and didn’t look back en route to a 6-2 win.
Blake Underwood had a hat trick for the hosts, who raised the Senior AA banner prior to this contest. Matt Turcotte, Darryl McKinnon and Shawn Walker each added a goal in the win. Chris Corbett and Brandon Fraser scored for Walkerton, who was outshot 45-23.
Jason Hamilton was very good in the Capitals crease, but suffered his second loss of the season. Josh Carolan picked up his first win of the year for Saugeen Shores.
The Capitals will be on the road for a pair of contests this weekend. Friday night, the team will be in Durham to take on the Thundercats. Saturday, Walkerton will visit the Lucknow Lancers. The next home game for the Caps is Friday, Oct. 21 when the Elora Rocks visit the county capital for an 8:30 p.m. start.
